10 curiosities about Brasília
The capital of Brazil was thoroughly planned before its construction and had some interesting facts about its structure, titles and records, even in the Guinness Book.

A city in a square (Federal District) is in the middle of the map. This is where the capital of the most colourful country in the world is. Brasília was planned with the well-being of residents and visitors in mind, with wide streets and trees everywhere. Freedom, fresh air and the beauties of the cerrado, welcome to Brasilia!
1 Brasilia was inaugurated in 1960 by former President Juscelino Kubitschek.
2 Its 'drawing' is in the shape of an aeroplane.
3 Brasilia does not have corners.
4 Streets and avenues meet in the so-called 'tesourinhas', which remembers a scissor.
5 Their addresses are formed by numbers and letters, following a logical sequence.
6 The renowned Lúcio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer made its planning and architectural projects.
7 The capital was recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1987.
8 The city has one of the largest urban parks in the world, Sarah Kubitschek Park.
9 Brasília's construction project is recognized as one of the most complete and modern in the world.
10 The biggest flag in the world is in Brasilia, with 286m², and was recognized by the Guinness Book.

JK Bridge
The bridge, designed by Alexandre Chan, is made of three arches that cross Lake Paranoá. It is 1,200 meters long, guaranteeing an incredible view during sunset.

Metropolitan Cathedral of Brasilia
Oscar Niemeyer conceived the building with 2,000 m² of stained glass and 16 arches that form a unique structure. Some people even say it remembers a spaceship about to take off. Inside are three bronze angels that hover over the visitors' heads.
Digital Tower
A tower in the shape of a cerrado flower. Designed by Oscar Niemeyer, the tower is 182 meters high and guarantees a 360° view of Brasília, Lake Paranoá and the Cerrado.

DeleteWhat a fascinating city! I would love to go there some day. The stained glass of the Metropolitan Cathedral is really impressive too, I don't think we have anything like that here in Ireland.
