3 Scenic Hikes to do in Ireland

Lace up those hiking boots and escape to the mountains!

We are so lucky to be surrounded by lush green landscapes, rivers, sea views and mountains on this gorgeous island of ours, making Ireland the perfect place to go hiking.

In recent years, hiking has exploded in popularity with thousands of new hikers now taking to our hills, mountains and walking trails each week to relax in nature, work up a sweat, or simply reconnect with pals or with themselves.

If you need some inspiration for your next hike then check out our suggestions for three of the most scenic hikes in Ireland:

Glendalough, Co Wicklow

Glendalough is a relatively short drive from Dublin making it the perfect option for a day trip. It never fails to disappoint due to its natural beauty and vast history associated with the area - the monastic settlement here dates back to the 6th century (Geraghty, 2021). Glendalough has a range of trails to choose from offering challenging hikes like the Spinc (the white route) to short, easy rambles like the Waterfall Walk (the pink route).

Glendalough is a frequent tourist hotspot, particularly on a fine summer's day so be aware of this before setting out on a trip as parking can be an issue despite there being three car parks to choose from in the area. The Upper and Lower Lake car parks have a fee of €4 for the day and the car park in Laragh is free.

Glendalough’s trails vary hugely in terms of length and difficulty so make sure to pack accordingly for each one. Bring plenty of water, snacks, waterproof gear and sunscreen depending on the weather.

Slieve Donard, Co Down

Slieve Donard is the highest mountain in Ulster and is part of the stunning Mourne Mountain range. From the summit you will see for miles over Co Down and further afield while if you look towards the sea you might even see the Isle of Man on a fine day.

Slieve Donard is a moderate - strenuous hike so you will need a reasonable level of fitness for this one. It takes on average between 4-5 hours and can be extremely steep towards the summit. As with longer, more challenging hikes always make sure you check the weather in advance, dress appropriately and bring adequate supplies.

After your descent, take a wander into the charming seaside town of Newcastle for some well-deserved food and drinks.

Cuilcagh Mountain Boardwalk, Co Fermanagh

The Cuilcagh Mountain Boardwalk, also known as the ‘Stairway to Heaven’ should be a must-do on anyone’s Northern Ireland bucket list. Located on the border between Co Fermanagh and Co Cavan, the boardwalk trail takes you through an expanse of blanket bog before leading up to a steep staircase. Upon reaching the viewing platform at the top, you will be rewarded with breathtaking sights over the countryside below. The walk all the way up and down can take anything from 3.5 to 6 hours depending on your pace and the length of your stops along the way

There’s a carpark located at the base of the mountain which will cost you €5 (Specialized Travel Services, 2023) and you’ll also find toilet facilities here but food and coffee kiosks are few and far in between in this area so make sure to bring a supply of snacks.
