When we decide to travel, the budget is one of the most important things to consider. Did you know that even on a tight budget, you can still go on amazing trips? These are the low-cost calls. Today I want to show you how to prepare for a backpacking trip. Let's leave tips to help you plan a low-cost trip for another day!

For starters, during a backpacking trip, you will need two types of backpacks: carry-on and rucksack. Both are measured in litres but have different purposes as well as sizes.

  • Carry-on backpack: it is smaller and serves to put the essential items for the day. In other words, this backpack is the one that will accompany you during your tours and your adventures in destinations. Usually from 10 to 35 litres, but be aware of your airline rules so it can travel as your carry-on.

  • Rucksack: it will be your new home! You will put clothes, shoes, equipment and other items that weigh more in it. Attention! It's a more oversized backpack, but that doesn't mean you should get the biggest one at the store. There is a litre limit according to your height that must be respected. Otherwise, you could end up hurting your back with excess weight.

Litres

Remember that the number of litres does not mean the number of kilos you can carry. The litres refer to the volume that the backpack can hold. Some brands recommend assuming that 5l equals 1kg.

Size

The more weight you carry, the harder the hike will be. That's why I said before that it doesn't mean you should buy the most oversized backpack in the store. In addition to your height, you should also consider the type of trip. If you are trekking, the backpack should be bigger so you can carry the equipment comfortably, from 70 to 80L.

In general, keep in mind that the backpack should hold ⅓ of the weight of the person carrying it. Some brands even make different backpacks for men and women. They take body differences into account and offer different ergonomics.

Basic Features

The more adjustable items you have, the better! Look for a rucksack with padded shoulder straps and hip belt, also chest straps. Those chest straps and hip belt help balance the weight, which allows you don't carry all the weight on your shoulders.

Another important tip is to get a rucksack that has a height adjustment. It adjusts the backpack better to your body. The back panel (responsible for support and posture) needs to have a breathable material because, during the walk, it is in contact with your sweat. Look for models with parts that come into contact with your body made of DrySystem, a porous fabric that works as a ventilation system.

Pockets can come in handy when we're on the road. They guarantee easy access to smaller items and even security to carry documents and money (have you seen those hidden or camouflaged pockets?).

And finally, the raincoat for your new companion. In addition to protecting from the rain, it also protects when shipping and storing because you can prevent any part from being damaged. Some rucksacks already have the rain cover attached, but put it on the shopping list if yours is different!

So, are you feeling more confident about buying your rucksack? If you still need to figure out where to go, see our tips about Ireland, Brazil and The Philippines! Remember to use our tips when organizing your carry-on bag too!
